Asian & Pacific Islander Caucus (APIC) of the UNC System

Stronger Together

Who We Are

Welcome to the Asian and Pacific Islander Caucus (APIC) of the UNC System!

We are a dynamic collective of faculty and staff united across the University of North Carolina System, committed to combatting racism against Asian and Pacific Islanders. Our mission is to foster a society marked by peace, equality, and the absence of racism, stereotypes, and intolerance.

Our History

Formed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, APIC emerged during a time of escalating anti-Asian hate crimes. The catalyst for our formation was the tragic Atlanta spa shooting in March 2021, where six Asian women lost their lives in an appalling act of violence. This event galvanized us to stand in solidarity with our community, to elevate our voices in advocacy rather than succumb to fear and silence.

Our Structure

To amplify our impact, we bridge faculty and staff from various campuses within the UNC System, creating a united front of advocacy and support. Since our inception in 2021, the response from our community and beyond has been overwhelmingly positive. To date, we have established chapters across 14 campuses, each dedicated to our collective mission of fostering an inclusive environment free from discrimination and prejudice.

Our Mission

We seek to represent all Asian and Pacific Islander faculty and staff across the UNC System. All faculty and staff of any race or ethnicity are welcome. Our four primary purposes are to promote: Awareness, Education, Advocacy, and Support.

Our mission is to harness the collective power of our diverse voices to enact enduring change, cultivating an environment that is universally welcoming and secure for everyone. Through dedicated efforts, we strive to dismantle the structures of racism and prejudice, ensuring that our community is a place where diversity is celebrated, and every individual can thrive without fear.

We want to promote AWARENESS of the current Asian and Pacific Islander community situation, using facts, data, and personal stories to raise understanding.

We want to provide EDUCATION about the increase in anti-Asian sentiment in the U.S. and across the globe and the solutions moving forward.

We wish to provide SUPPORT for our API colleagues in the UNC System by sharing stories and experiences and increasing communication among us.
